Vodafone in talks to buy Tesco’s loss-making Blinkbox streaming service

Blinkbox_Movies_Descriptor_Digital_Horiz_FFFFFF

Vodafone is set to buy the loss-making on-demand video service Blinkbox from Tesco, according to The Telegraph. It reports that talks between the mobile operator and the supermarket are so far advanced that all other parties have withdrawn from the bidding. Vodafone is expected to pick up Blinkbox for a relatively small sum as the service has struggled against bigger rivals including Sky, Apple, Amazon and Netflix. Tesco’s desire to sell the service has accelerated since it revealed a £246 million blackhole in the accounts of its main grocery business earlier this year. KineMaster could be the best video-editing app for Android

Photo 28-11-2014 12 46 04

Smartphones are getting bigger and more powerful, and the lines between ‘PC’ and ‘phone’ are very much blurred. While everyone now has the potential to be a one-man film crew, you’re only as good as your tools permit, which is why I’ve been on the hunt for the best video-editing app Android has to offer. And it’s been a tough old slog. In my quest to find the ultimate video-editing app, I tried pretty much everything there is out there. And if I’m being honest, there is a lot of trash. There are a number of pretty good social-focused apps…

Yoozon

Social media sites must simplify their terms, UK parliamentary committee says

UK parliament

Social media sites should drastically simplify their terms and conditions, according to a new report from the UK parliament’s Science and Technology Committee. Running the risk of stating the obvious, MPs say the complexity of the terms and conditions means many users aren’t fully aware of how their data can be used. The committee is calling on the UK government to work with the Information Commissioner to develop a new set of standards that websites and apps can sign up to, committing to explain how they use personal data in clear, concise and simple terms. Andrew Miller MP, chair of…

Yandex’s new browser is a bold UI experiment that takes the best from Chrome and Opera

2014-11-27_16h35_18

Russian internet giant Yandex has launched an alpha version of its new Chromium-based browser for Windows and Mac OS X that incorporates a few interesting ideas of how a modern browser might look. The main difference from the interface of Chrome or Firefox is the ultimate minimalism and the fact that the tabs are moved to the bottom of the page. Explaining its new approach in a blog post, Yandex stated that it treats each website as a standalone application rather than a few linked pages of content. That’s why the tabs are moved all the way to the bottom…

Tesco-owned Blinkbox now lets you watch movies offline on both iPad and Android tablets

a-730x456

Two weeks after Tesco’s on-demand movie-streaming service Blinkbox finally brought offline mode into the mix for iPad, Android users can now download content directly to their devices too. Blinkbox launched its Android tablet app almost two years ago, and has since added Chromecast support across its mobile products. While both the iPad and Android versions let you watch movies and TV shows on your device, the former incarnation still doesn’t let you browse and buy content – you must first purchase a title through a browser, then visit the iPad app. Tesco has previously suggested that it may sell or…
