Make It Fast brings 140-second video chats to Chrome

It’s hardly tricky to organize a video chat with someone. Besides Skype, Google Hangouts and FaceTime, there’s an ever growing (and usually quite irritating) army of options. If you want to keep it quick, here’s an interesting alternative: Make It Fast is a Chrome extension that lets you video chat with friends straight from any tab. It limits you to 140 second chats and only lets you speak to the same person twice an hour. I love those constraints – it means you stick to the point and aren’t tempted to keep bugging the same people – but right now, you’re restricted…

An app for Mac and PC from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab called “Eyes on the Solar System” lets you watch a live computer simulation of New Horizons’ approach. You can watch…

Gamee is a new social network for casual gamers

gamee3
Half a year ago in an interview with The Next Web, Jan Rezab, founder of Socialbakers, mentioned a $600,000 “family investment” in a Prague-based startup. Now the veil mystery has been lifted with the launch of Gamee, a mobile-first casual gaming social network with an interesting business model and distinctive stance against in-app purchases. Founded by Czech software developers, the network is headed by ex-Googler Bozena Rezab, Jan’s wife. “First we decided to invest money in Gamee, and then it got so exciting for me that I joined them as CEO,” Bozena told TNW. “The team has experience in gaming and…

Uber resumes credit card payments in India

UberAuto header image
Uber has begun accepting credit card payments again in India today, after it was forced by local legislation to switch to a mobile wallet payment system last November. The new system follows the Reserve Bank of India’s guidelines, which prescribe mandatory two-factor authentication for use with credit cards when physical cards aren’t presented. So if you use a credit card to pay for your next ride, you’ll also need to enter your online banking PIN or a one-time password generated and sent by your bank over SMS to complete the transaction. The cab service has partnered with mobile payment processing…

Grids for Instagram desktop app arrives on Windows

People use Instagram in different ways, and it’s become obvious that many more than the company ever expected actually like viewing (and  — gasp — uploading) their Instagram collection on the desktop. Instagram does facilitate a utilitarian sort of desktop interaction, but a very handsome app called Grids came along for the Mac a few months ago that made viewing Instagram a whole lot more pleasurable. Now, PC users can share in the delightful experience, as Grids has now launched a version of the same app for Windows. The app runs much the same way on Windows as on the Mac, with a clean…

This on-demand service lets you plan your wedding via text

static1.squarespace
Wedding planning sucks. Soon-to-be marrieds are left reconciling the event they’ve carefully groomed on their Secret Wedding Pinterest board with the actual reality of budget and time constraints. You’re poor and you’re busy, and you’ve already agreed to throw a party for nearly everyone you know so you can announce you’re no longer single. That’s why Knotify, a San Francisco-based app that launched today on Product Hunt, will help you plan and execute practically any aspect of your wedding via text. Knotify — pronounced like “knot-ify” in an overt reference to tying one — offers a subscription-based concierge service that will…

Here’s a brilliant way to create instant chatrooms that disappear when you’re done

Screenshot 2015-07-10 13.40.23
There’s no shortage of ways to chat anonymously or otherwise online but Hack.chat is a really great new addition to the mix. Plus, it plays nice with code and even LaTeX markup. The site lets you create your own instant and disposable chat channel, simply by adding ? and the name you want to use at the end of the URL. For instance http://ift.tt/1NYzC1a. I can definitely see myself using this to set up a quick and dirty – emphasis on dirty – back channel at an event or just for throwing shade in secret on a day-to-day basis. Sure…
