Pixcall for iOS lets you gather far-flung friends for a simultaneous photo shoot

pixcall
What if you want to touch base with a group of friends or family right now, or maybe later today — except they’re spread out all over the globe? Leave the details to Pixcall, a new iOS app. Created as an alternative to one-on-one FaceTime chats or group Google Hangouts, Pixcall is based on still photos shot simultaneously by selected participants — a kind of hybrid photo messaging. At times when calling everyone or initiating a group chat takes too much time, or you don’t really want a long conversation, Pixcall lets you check in without too much fuss. Pixcall imports all your…

Deep Dreamer generates bizarre visualizations from your photos, GIFs and videos

Train-abstract
Dreams or nightmares? Sorry, I had to ask. The question may seem unfair, and is not a reflection on the idea or the output generated by Deep Dreamer, a brand new app launched into public beta today by Realmac — makers of RapidWeaver, Typed and other apps. The real question is the underlying purpose of Deep Dreamer, and that’s where — aside from its rather bizarre visualizations — it all gets interesting. Part of the reason is that Deep Dreamer isn’t merely a photo filter for non-conformists is that it’s built on newly open sourced Deepdream code from Google for research it is doing…

Celebs are endorsing Uber in a totally authentic grassroots campaign against NYC Mayor

Screenshot 2015-07-22 12.04.58
Uber is in the middle of a nasty fight with NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio over a potential limit to the number of drivers on city streets. The company already sent de Blasio to the burn unit over a shady dig at the idea deployed right in the app. And now celebrities are expressing their outrage on Twitter via the “grass roots” hashtag #UberMovesNYC. One notable tweet came from actor (and Uber Sky customer) Neil Patrick Harris, which has been retweeted more than 400 times: .@BilldeBlasio: 25K new residents use @Uber_NYC each week. How is a fixed # of cars supposed to…

Microsoft’s new Send app makes email more like WhatsApp

Microsoft wants to streamline email. Today’s it’s launching a new app called Send – iOS only for now – that makes email more like SMS by removing the subject line and taking you directly to your contacts list. Microsoft thinks email can be a bit too cumbersome by modern communication standards; you have to open the app, open a compose window, type your contact into the recipient field, and then write a subject line before you even really get to your message. On the other hand, you probably have many email contacts without a phone number logged in your address…

You can now watch vertical videos in full screen on YouTube’s Android app

YouTube full-screen
The latest version of YouTube for Android displays portrait mode videos in all their full-screen glory, making it easier and a lot less annoying to watch videos shot vertically. Prior to this update, YouTube would display vertical videos in full-screen landscape mode, which kept the actual viewing area nearly as small as the preview screen. The new feature comes in handy when you’re watching Vine roundups or clips sent by your non-techie relatives. Full-screen mode for portrait videos on YouTube looks great Want to see how it works for yourself? Try this clip on your Android device. Sadly, the new feature…

Pause literally puts the music into music magazines

pause
Last time we caught up with music discovery app Pause, it had just arrived on Android following its iOS launch. It was evolving into a music magazine, with the promise of platform supporting a range of publishers. Now that platform has arrived. In practice, that means there’s now more content on offer. The Pause team has worked with publications including Drowned in Sound, FACT and Dummy, allowing them to create ‘magazines’ containing written articles with musical accompaniment. So, while reading Joanna Gruesome‘s views about mysogyny in music you can listen to her songs, too. Pause has also created genre guides, so you can listen…

Don’t know how much money to take on holiday? This iOS and Android app will tell you

Screenshot 2015-07-22 10.28.10
Apparently, 50 percent of British people don’t know how to budget when they travel abroad. But, consider this, the survey was conducted by Travelex, the foreign exchange company, which coincidentally has an app to hawk. The company only surveyed 2,000 travellers to come up with its figures but, despite the relatively small sample, the app that has sprung from the thinking is a pretty good idea. The company claims the Travelex Money App (free on Android and iOS)  – nice, simple name there – will “ease the stress” of deciding how much money to spend abroad. The trick is that it shows you how much…

WhatsApp for Android now makes sure you never miss a conversation

WhatsApp Android
WhatsApp has been updated on Android with a few useful new features, including an option to mark conversations as unread, as spotted by Android Police. Tap and hold on any conversation pane and you’ll spot the new feature at the bottom of the menu. It adds a green circle to your selected chat so it’s easier to spot — but it won’t affect the read status on messages within each conversation. The new version also lets you set custom notifications for contacts and groups. Open any contact’s details and you’ll be able to configure specific tones for calls and messages,…

Deezer has integrated with IFTTT to turn your listening habits into actions

Screenshot 2015-07-22 09.25.57
There’s a real battle among music streaming services to stand out in the post-Apple Music, still-laughing-at-Tidal world. Spotify’s latest move is bringing a weekly personalized playlist into the mix. Now Deezer’s doing it with If This Then That (IFTTT) integration. The music subscription service will now allow users to hook up their accounts to IFTTT’s automation service and build recipes that trigger actions based on their listening habits. Examples include: automatically sharing a track via Facebook or Twitter when you favorite it in the Deezer app, changing your device’s wallpaper to match your current most listened album’s artwork, and adding artists…
