YouTube for iOS now lets you view full-screen playback of vertical videos

vertical
It seems like only yesterday — well it was, in fact, yesterday — that an update for the Android version of YouTube offered new support for full-screen playback of vertical videos. Today, a new update to the iOS version also supports that feature. Yay. YouTube version 10.28, posted on the App Store today, informed users of the eagerly awaited feature. In launching the app however, the improvement may not be immediately obvious. A vertical video will still play in its narrow box at the top of the screen until you use a gesture to expand it — and presto, the videos now look really…

Dual-camera photo app Frontback will shut down on August 15

Frontback---General
Frontback, the mobile app that first takes a photo with your rear camera and then with your front camera to ostensibly catch your reaction, is shutting down. The app will cease to exist in its current form on August 15. Frontback CEO Frédéric della Faille wrote about closing up shop in a blog post on the site: While we’ve seen exciting results with some communities, for most of the new members it takes too much time and effort to understand why Frontback is different, resulting in an infrequent use of our product. After discussions with our team and investors, we realized that…

No, there isn’t a ‘secret’ middle finger emoji in WhatsApp

Screenshot 2015-07-23 18.09.05
I hate to spoil the fun… No, wait, who am I kidding? I love to spoil the fun. I’m the Grinch with a better complexion and a more rigorous grooming routine. So here goes: There isn’t a ‘secret’ middle finger emoji in WhatsApp. Just call @brokenbottleboy ‘The Grinch’, you know you want to… I mean, it’s true that buried in the code there’s a folder with emoji that you can’t actually use yet but that doesn’t mean they’re a secret. The ‘middle finger’ emoji was approved in Unicode 7. It’s available in Windows 10. The likelihood is that it and others (like Spock’s…

Google’s 360-degree movies app is now available on iOS

Google Spotlight Stories iOS
Google Spotlight Stories, a hub for playing 360-degree movies on your phone, has finally made its way to iOS. To be clear, these movies aren’y exactly virtual reality – you move your phone around to look at different parts of the films, but you don’t need a Google Cardboard headset or other VR system to view them. Spotlight Stories first appeared as ‘Spotlight Player’ on Motorola’s Android phones back in 2013. and made its way…

Slack gets Google Calendar integration to stop you forgetting meetings

DSCF7861
This might be Slack’s most useful integration yet: Google Calendar is available from today. The integration can remind on both a group and personal level. For example, as a team you can add a shared Google Calendar to a channel so meeting reminders are dropped there for everyone to see. If you’d prefer reminders just for yourself, you can add your personal calendar and Slackbot will happily directly message you reminders instead. The integration can also post calendar summaries so you (or the entire channel) can get a daily list of what’s on the agenda. To set up Google Calendar, just head over…

Chrome for iOS can now talk to Physical Web devices

Google Chrome iOS
Google has updated its Chrome browser for iOS with support for its Physical Web standard, which allows smart devices to communicate with your phone without the need for other apps. This refers to Google’s open source protocol that lets connected devices like parking meters and bus stops send URLs straight to Chrome’s Today view widget for actions like payments or checking how long you’ll have to wait for your ride. The company says it’s only begun exploring how this technology can make users’ lives easier, so it’s not clear exactly how widely available Physical Web devices are just now. In…
