Screen Shot 2015-08-09 at 13.32.58
I’ve always been a fan of journaling. I find it great for venting and gaining perspective on things, as well as enjoying jotting down random thoughts and ideas. So when I heard about Moodnotes, a new app for iOS that aims to track your moods and feelings through journaling, I felt compelled to give it a go. It costs $3.99 to download and works by sending you a daily notification asking you to rate your overall mood using an adjustable smiley face. Depending on your response, you are presented with a couple of relevant questions to help you dig a…

EFF’s Privacy Badger extension is finally ready to block ‘super-cookies’

privacybadger
There are a lot of privacy tools available already that promise to block a whole range of ads, but the Electronic Frontier Foundation’s (EFF) long-awaited Privacy Badger extension has finally officially launched after more than a year in testing. While Ghostery, Adblock Plus, Disconnect, Keep My Opt Outs and a range of other services all do a similar job – blocking tracking by advertisers – the EFF thought the average internet citizen needed an easier tool to block “non-consensual trackers”. Privacy Badger works by creating a list of the third-party domains that embed images, scripts and ads in any pages you visit.…

Markbook is another place to save content you probably won’t read later

Markbook
I’ve previously written about my struggle to read all the articles I’ve saved for later. Things haven’t got easier since, but I still appreciate tools that help me curate content to read at some point, and Markbook’s a new one that tech enthusiasts will enjoy. The Web app pairs with a Chrome extension to collect links from your favorites and upvotes on Twitter, Product Hunt, HackerNews, Github and Medium. It then lets you organize them into collections for easy reference. Markbook in action What’s neat about Markbook is that once you’ve installed the Chrome extension, you don’t need to set…

Why a guy who rapped about HTML and a former ‘Masterchef’ contestant built a property app

Each week we’re profiling one company that has been selected for Boost – our early-stage startup growth program. Catch up with these companies in person at The Next Web Conference in New York on November 18. It’s hard to knock Knocker, the app I previously described as “Tinder for UK property,” because it does its job so smoothly. Built upon data from Zoopla, the iOS app makes swiping through available places to let and buy, incredibly easy and actually enjoyable. The app was created by two Manchester-based entrepreneurs Jon Grant and Sam Easterby-Smith. I dropped them a line to find…

Darkroom 2 for iOS adds granular color editing tool and filter sharing via Instagram

Screen Shot 2015-08-06 at 11.57.46 AM
Darkroom, an app many already like for editing photos on iOS, has been updated. Version 2 brings in an embarrassment of new tools and features, with an improved color altering tool and the ability to share your custom filters. The color tool now lets you choose distinct color profiles in your photo, and adjust the hue, saturation and luminance of each. The filter sharing feature lets you forward your presets to others, but does so in a unique way. When you post a picture to Instagram, others can take a screenshot of your photo, and an on-image QR code automatically makes…

GameOn rallies sports fans with news, stickers and trash talk

Screenshot 2015-08-05 22.46.28
Sports fan culture is binary: either you get it or you don’t. For those willing to go down the rabbit hole for their favorite sport or local team, there’s endless amounts of blogs, publications, columns and hot takes to sink your teeth into. But there isn’t really an efficient way to connect with other fans of the same sport, outside the comments section of blogs, a fantasy league chatroom or countless message boards devoted to the topic. GameOn, an app for iOS and Android that comes out of beta today, is designed to fill that hole in a sports fan’s toolkit by providing private…
