Report: Uber to begin e-commerce deliveries soon

Uber_Logo_White_Background
Uber is taking another step in fulfilling its aims of becoming a true logistics company, according to report on Re/code released today. The ride-sharing behemoth will unveil a new partnership with big retailers and fashion brands as early as this month. The partnership will reportedly focus on luxury, with Uber sidling up to high-end brands commonly found on New York’s 5th avenue. It has also been in talks with Bigcommerce and Shopify to create easy interfaces for retailers to partner with the company. This wouldn’t be the first time that Uber has flirted with e-commerce delivery — its UberRUSH program partnered with…

Lara Croft GO takes Tomb Raider in a beautiful new direction

Screen Shot 2015-09-04 at 17.27.47
Lara Croft GO is a fresh take on the classic Tomb Raider franchise. Starring everyone’s favorite archaeologist, Lara Croft, it’s a turn-based puzzle game, similar in style to Hitman GO. Admittedly, I wasn’t crazy about previous Tomb Raider games, but when I heard that Square Enix had taken Lara Croft down the puzzle game route, I just had to try it out and it hasn’t disappointed. A thing of beauty What struck me first were the visuals; a beautiful, whimsical style that isn’t far removed from Monument Valley‘s puzzle layout. The world that Lara Croft is navigating her way through is…

DocStoc is shuttering its document sharing platform

Docstoc
Financial software maker Intuit is closing down Docstoc, the document sharing platform it acquired in 2013. According to VentureBeat, the death of Docstoc is a result of Intuit’s decision “to discontinue these products.” The site is urging users to export their files before December 1. However, the team said it plans to continue to support existing customers, but won’t allow new registrations. In its lifetime, Docstoc faced competition from services like Scribd and LinkedIn’s Slideshare. In addition to hosting users’ private files, it also made resources like business plan templates, sample lease agreements and sponsorship proposals available to the public.…

Addictive app Byte turns your iPhone into stupid, creative fun

Screenshot 2015-09-03 15.47.12
If there’s anyone at TNW who is really into what the hip kids are looking at, it’s Owen Williams. My Amsterdam-based colleague slipped a URL of an app launching today, Byte, into our Slack channel and left it there for me to find. What I didn’t expect was spending an ungodly long time staring at GIFs, carefully using emoji to create a piece of looping MIDI music, and choosing the right shade of pink to fill my phone screen up with as much garbage as possible. If I were to put it succinctly, Byte is what would happen if Blingee…

As on-demand drivers become scarce, Uber holds all the cards

Uber_Drive_Blog_Header
From where I am right now, in a southward neighborhood of San Francisco, I can order practically anything from my phone to be delivered to my house at nearly any time of day. Groceries? Absolutely. Ramen? Sure. Laundry Service? Why not. Postal Service? Yes. Flowers? Within the hour. Booze? Glad you asked. But all of these companies need someone to physically come to my house, either with goods in hand or able to pick up and deliver what I need to get done. That requires someone with free time and a car. It’s a resource that, especially in this city, has become…
