Alda is a new programming language that lets you compose music in a text editor

Alda
For years, composers and producers have used complex tools to digitally score music. Developer Dave Yarwood wants to change all that with Alda, a new programming language he created to help people write scores with little to no coding experience. Yarwood found GUI-based scoring and production tools like Sibelius distracting and limiting when it came to actually penning music. Alda strips all that away and presents users with a simple syntax that they can use to compose MIDI scores in a text editor, without the need to learn a new software interface. A basic score with its syntax in Alda…

Maskbot will keep your dirty online subscriptions private

Screenshot 2015-09-06 10.47.21
It’s 2015: a subscription to practically any online service is a license to get doxxed. But when you’re subscribing to a dirty, salacious online service (perhaps rhyming with “Smashley Shmadison“?) or all of the porn, it’s also a recipe for a maelstrom of online shame and scandal. Email privacy tool Maskbot allows you to create unlimited random aliases that redirect to an email address of your choice, meaning that you can generate as many different accounts as you choose to filter back to one single place. The process is simple: plug in an alias to sign up for something, and field all the…

Lara Croft GO takes Tomb Raider in a beautiful new direction

Screen Shot 2015-09-04 at 17.27.47
Lara Croft GO is a fresh take on the classic Tomb Raider franchise. Starring everyone’s favorite archaeologist, Lara Croft, it’s a turn-based puzzle game, similar in style to Hitman GO. Admittedly, I wasn’t crazy about previous Tomb Raider games, but when I heard that Square Enix had taken Lara Croft down the puzzle game route, I just had to try it out and it hasn’t disappointed. A thing of beauty What struck me first were the visuals; a beautiful, whimsical style that isn’t far removed from Monument Valley‘s puzzle layout. The world that Lara Croft is navigating her way through is…

DocStoc is shuttering its document sharing platform

Docstoc
Financial software maker Intuit is closing down Docstoc, the document sharing platform it acquired in 2013. According to VentureBeat, the death of Docstoc is a result of Intuit’s decision “to discontinue these products.” The site is urging users to export their files before December 1. However, the team said it plans to continue to support existing customers, but won’t allow new registrations. In its lifetime, Docstoc faced competition from services like Scribd and LinkedIn’s Slideshare. In addition to hosting users’ private files, it also made resources like business plan templates, sample lease agreements and sponsorship proposals available to the public.…

Addictive app Byte turns your iPhone into stupid, creative fun

Screenshot 2015-09-03 15.47.12
If there’s anyone at TNW who is really into what the hip kids are looking at, it’s Owen Williams. My Amsterdam-based colleague slipped a URL of an app launching today, Byte, into our Slack channel and left it there for me to find. What I didn’t expect was spending an ungodly long time staring at GIFs, carefully using emoji to create a piece of looping MIDI music, and choosing the right shade of pink to fill my phone screen up with as much garbage as possible. If I were to put it succinctly, Byte is what would happen if Blingee…
