Swytch lets you use up to five ‘burner’ UK phone numbers from a single device

swytch_feat
If the idea of merging your work and personal contacts fills you with horror, but a dual-SIM phone doesn’t fulfil your needs, then Swytch’s app for iOS and Android devices could be right up your street. In essence, all you need to do is download the app and register a new number, which qualifies you for 50 pence of calling credit. Making calls on your new virtual number costs 6 pence per minute to a UK number (or per SMS), but calls between two Swytch users are always free – a bit like Skype. “Swytch does for mobile numbers what Dropbox…

Apple removes some adblockers from the App Store over privacy concerns

Adblockers
Apple has removed certain content blocking apps from the App Store over concerns that users’ data could be exposed to third parties. The company has removed apps that install root certificates which allow servers access to your private internet traffic in order to identify incoming ads and block them. Essentially, that means users are unwittingly allowing man-in-the-middle attacks and putting themselves at risk of being spied on or having malicious code injected into their browsers. The developers behind these apps may have good intentions, but it’s possible that not all of them have users’ best interests in mind or could become targets…

Netflix increases HD subscription to $10 for new users

Netflix iPad
Netflix’s HD streaming subscription is getting a small price hike: it will now cost $9.99 instead of $8.99. Bloomberg reported on the price hike earlier, and the new rate is reflected on Netflix’s sign-up page. Engadget received this statement from Netflix: “To continue adding more TV shows and movies including many Netflix original titles, we are modestly raising the price for some new members in the U.S., Canada and Latin America. As a thank you to existing Netflix members — who aren’t already benefiting from a previous price guarantee — we will maintain their current price for a year.” If you’re already…

Trove uses 3D printing technology to create customized jewelry

trove-bracelets
It’s easy to write off 3D printing as an enthusiast’s hobby — one that is reserved for those with enough skill to work in design software or enough of a budget to purchase their own printer. But the cool thing about it is its consumer applications, and the way it makes objects accessible to a mainstream audience. Trove, a consumer website that formally launched today, takes the principles of 3D printing and applies them to fine jewelry. Co-founder and CEO Brian Park, who previously worked as a Product Manager for mobile games company Zynga, became interested in 3D printing, but…

SwiftKey’s new app could one day write entire emails for you

swiftkey neural
Artificial intelligence technology being developed by SwiftKey could eventually write whole sentences, or maybe even whole emails, for you. A new experimental keyboard app has gone live on Android today that uses neural networks to predict what word you’ll want to type next, and it’s a significant step forward from SwiftKey’s current ‘smart’ keyboard. The current ‘N-gram’ generation of SwiftKey technology looks at the frequency with which you use certain strings of words to help you type faster. By comparison, SwiftKey Neural looks at ‘clusters’ of words to infer the rough meaning of your sentence. That means that it knows…

Burner now connects with Slack, Evernote to make your phone number smarter

Hero image
Burner has reliably turned smartphones into hosts for disposable numbers. But today the company has debuted a host of ways to use those numbers, which founder and CEO Greg Cohn refers to as the “smart phone number.” The company today introduced ‘Burner Connections’ — integrations that allow functionality to be built into Burner numbers. Currently, there are four integrations with Burner: Slack, Evernote, Dropbox and Soundcloud. “As a business, we’re just excited about the idea that people will be able to connect phone numbers to their infrastructure, and we’re freeing the phone number,” Cohn told TNW. “You can do lots of…
