Aurous, a new music streaming service wants you to fall in love with BitTorrent all over again. The desktop app, which was launched today on Windows, OSX and Linux is an interface that makes searching through the sea of legally hazy music files easier. Built by by Andrew Sampson and a developer going by the name ‘Dana’ in Miami, the paired down interface looks a lot like Spotify’s. The initial version allows users to search by artist, song title and album name, in much the same vein as fans of old mp3 download services like Limewire would do. However, instead of downloading…

Adobe’s apology for Lightroom update fails to placate angry users as it examines options

lightroom
Last week, at the start of Adobe’s MAX creative conference, the company pushed updates to a number of its desktop and mobile software packages. The Lightroom 6 update in particular generated intense buzz, but for the wrong reason: It made the app crash. Adobe hastily issued new update (version 6.2.1) to fix the crash and apologized for the problem in a blog post. Said product manager Tom Hogarty: I’d like to personally apologize for the quality of the Lightroom 6.2 release we shipped on Monday…  In our efforts to simplify the import experience we introduced instability that resulted in a significant…

Home is an app that fills a void Apple left in its HomeKit framework

HomeAppTNW
Apple’s HomeKit framework gets a lot of attention, but there’s no forward-facing app from Apple. Home, an app from developer Matthias Hochgatterer, might be just what you’re looking for. HomeKit is Apple’s reach into your ‘smart’ home, but it’s just a framework. It allows third-party OEMs to link together without having to implement a ton of APIs from each other. In leaning on Apple for the smart home, Siri also comes into play, making it easy for users. You can ask Siri to do simpler things like turn lights (linked to HomeKit, of course) on or off. Those lights you’re…

Google Street View adds virtual reality support

image00
If you have a Google Cardboard compatible headset lying around, Street View is about to get a lot more fun. Google today announced support for Cardboard in its mobile Street View apps for Android and iOS. The update will allow you to explore locations in 360 degrees (although not quite 3D, as that would require a different camera set up). Street View is one of the most obvious applications for Cardboard, given it’s already constructed in 360 degrees; it’s somewhat surprising Street View didn’t have the feature earlier. In the same blog post, the company also announced that Cardboard is…
