Steam kills paid mods for Skyrim after user backlash

Steam
Last week, Steam launched the ability for developers to build mods that could be sold on the Workshop. The first game to get the new feature was Skyrim, with more to come in the future. Unfortunately for the company, that didn’t go down well. Users responded with a very vocal backlash about the functionality, even going as far as making the top mod on the store a protest about paid mods. In response, Steam has stepped back on the feature and has removed it from the Skyrim workshop. Those that actually purchased a mod will receive a full refund. A…

Latest Vivaldi browser preview brings useful tab stacking feature, mouse gestures and more

Earlier this year, former Opera CEO Jon von Tetzchner, launched Vivaldi as a new browser for power users. Today, the company has released the latest preview of the browser which adds some interesting new features. The most interesting new feature is the ability to tile browser tabs in a single window. This is particularly useful if you’re using a large screen and don’t want to have multiple windows floating around for individual tabs. It’s a pretty nifty way to view tabs and is something I’ve not seen in other browsers previously. It’s quite useful for comparing two products or following along with an event.…

Sendish is a cut-throat new photo-sharing app that doesn’t want to see your brunch pics

IMG_8017
Sendish is a new photo-sharing app that is described by its founders as being ‘honestly anonymous.’ Released this week on iOS only, the idea behind it is to promote sharing without apprehension. You take a photo of where you are in the world without any filters or edits and it gets sent around the globe from person to person without any more detail than the location of where it was taken and the time. Sounds good, right? Well, this is where things get a little muddled. The aim of the app is to promote sharing worldwide without having to be…

The Apple Watch is the simplest way to buy from Amazon yet

Amazon
While many early third-party Apple Watch apps aren’t that impressive, a few stand out – Amazon’s, for one. It’s perhaps the most streamlined and straightforward way to buy something from the retailer yet. Here’s how it works… The only thing you can do from the app’s homescreen is tap the search button. This brings up the Watch’s standard voice interface screen, allowing you to say what you want to buy. This isn’t something you’ll always be happy to do in public, of course, but voice is often your only option when it comes to interfacing with the Apple Watch. (Incidentally, while the…

#Homescreen for iOS update lets you check out other people’s apps

homescreen

#Homescreen for iOS, the app that lets you share what apps you’ve got installed with friends, has today received a big update that makes it easier to discover new apps and icon layouts. The update introduces a new mode where you can endlessly scroll through other people’s home screens to find out what apps they’re using. It’s a fun way to discover new apps that doesn’t involve trawling through the Apple App Store. Previously, the only way to view other people’s shared home screens was via the web interface. You can share other people’s home screens to Twitter (which seems…

Who is Happy shares your joy at smoking a joint, but what’s the point?

WhoIsHappy

The move towards legalizing cannabis usage in various US states and other countries – or at least decriminalizing it – has led to the growth of a few niche services for ‘tokers’ and medicinal users of the little green leaf. One such app, launching today in the US, is Who is Happy, which lets you broadcast your general location each time you smoke cannabis in a bid to show solidarity with other users around the world. In essence, all it allows you to do is monitor your own ‘happiness’ statistics, and those of your country. You can also compare the…

Dashlane has launched an online tool designed to make email inboxes more secure – and drive sign-ups to its password manager app, though no account is required to use the scanner service. Receiving an email from a hacked account is a fairly common occurrence for most people, which highlights just how much of a target they are for would-be attackers. As a rich source of personal information and service registration details, they can be incredibly lucrative places for intruders that get past your password. To help bring into focus exactly how much sensitive information – and specifically, how many plain-text…

How VisaEase helped me get one step closer to obtaining US citizenship

US passport immigration travel

My friends always seem surprised when I tell them I’m not yet an American citizen. “But you’ve been in this country forever,” they say. “Wait, so you’ve never voted?” The United States immigration policy is a complicated one, to say the least. There are numerous types of visas to get to US soil depending on the purpose of your move, and it’s even more difficult when English is your second language. To help make the process simpler, VisaEase, an Austin-based immigration assistance company, launched an online tool to help make filling out all the right forms less overwhelming. Which, to…
